Pruning Walnut Trees

How to prune walnut trees:

We can distinguish two different types of fruiting among the walnut varieties:

  • Varieties with fruiting on terminal twigs: Franquette, Parisienne, Meylannaise, Corne…
  • Varieties with fruiting on lateral twigs: Fernor, Lara, Ferjean…

Considering the different type of fruiting, it’s important to fit pruning. For the varieties with
fruiting on terminal wigs we advice to use the Bush pruning. For the varieties with fruiting on
lateral twigs, we advice to use the structured axis or the free axis pruning.

The first year, we advice not cut the tree:

  • To further the stake in reserve and to allow a good development of roots.
  • To avoid to sensitize the tree to cold autumn.
